More information about Antonio Gaudi’s designs.

These are some information I gather on the Barcelona trip:

Antonio Gaudi was a Spanish designer bon in 1852 in Reus, Spain. He studied at the Escola Superior d'Arquitectura in Barcelona and designed his first major commission for the Casa Vincens in Barcelona using a Gothic Revival style that set a precedent for his future work. He was very passionate believer in God and his he was using religious aspects in some of his designs. He developed sensuous, curving; almost surreal design style established him as the innovative leader of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement. His hard work reflects in his designs. Three days before his death he was run over by a tram in Barcelona in 1926 and because of that he passed away. The accident didn’t stop him of hard work and until his last breath he was drawing his ideas on paper.

La Sagrada Familia
These are pictures I took of the Sagrada Familia cathedral design by Antonio Gaudi. As you can see the building is very different then comment knows cathedrals all over the world. Gaudi was working on this project for 10 years and you can see that every element of this structure is worked to the perfection. All the components are working together and create an impression of movement. The design is very dynamic and full of energy plus it inspired me as well. His designs defiantly made me curtained that I want to be a designer myself

One of the biggest impacts on my project had this staircase inspired by nature (shell). I love the dynamic and look of this set of stairs. There is defiantly movement capture with in this structure

My sketchbook work

These are examples of the
drawings from my sketchbook. I really like the look of them because they look very professional especial the one drawn with fine pen.

This drawing is inspired by Victor Horta's designs. I started to build up this flowing design with very organic elements. I like the energy of this design and I think it worked out very well.I think I will use this pattern in my final design.

The inspiration for those two drawings I took from the interior design magazine. I think both of them capturing movement. In my opinion they are quite successful especially the mirror is my favourite maybe because is in an art nouveau stile.

This is very similar example to the drawing on the top of the page and as well as the previous I have been inspired by Horta’s designs. I used some colour to make the drawing more interesting. I think it worked and the drawing is very successful. In my opinion is more flowing then the black and white one and is more delicate as well.

Those are the decorative elements I have drawn inspired by articles in interior design magazines. I was trying to capture movement within those designs. I don’t think they worked out very well but they are very nice and decorative and I think many people would use them in their houses.

Trip to Barelona

On the beginning of February I went on a trip to Barcelona with my college group. Before I went I really didn’t know what to expect, the only think I knew about this city is that it is full of public art. I was pleasantly surprise of amount of art and incredible architecture this city offers. I have fall in love particular in Casa Milà design by Antoni Gaudí. This experience opened my eyes for different aspects of design aspecial  for architecture. It made me change the concept of my project. I have decided to focused more on the movement within the design by architecture and elements within the space more than decorative elements.

Casa Milà

This is a front view of Casa Mila. As you can see this building is defiantly original, different than anything I ever seen before. Gaudi’s design is very brave and he creates and discovers unconventional architectural structure. His design is very inspirational for me not only because is an incredible piece of art but you can see his passion behind anything he has done.

This is a model of the Casa Mila placed on the top of the building in the attic of the museum. I love all the details capture form the actual building in this model.

These are incredible picture of inside of the building. Gaudi not only created lovely outside of the house but he designed inside of the building to perfection as well. Plus it plays a big role of the capturing natural lighting in the interior.

These are pictures of the interior of the rooms in Casa Mila. I think it is incredible that I could see the original arrangement of the rooms. The experience made me feel like I travelled in to past times, I almost could fell and hear people going around the flat, carry on their domestic activities, I found it fascinating.

Visiting Casa Mila was such an incredible experience. I have enjoy every moment of it. I have learned a lot and it really helped me with development of my project.

Inspiration

I have been trying to draw different pattern in my sketchbook. I have been inspired by Victor Horta. As you can see the line a very flowing and delicate. This is the first study i did so its not as successfully as i would like it to be . I will take this sketch feather and build it up or use different media then pencil.

These are few photos of my drawing.

Victor Horta

I have been inspired by amazing designer Victor Horta. His designs especially the staircase design creates the effect of the movement with in the room. I am very impressed by his work and would like to work in this stile on this project.

These are some historical information about Victor’s life and designs taken fromWikipedia website:
Victor, Baron Horta (6 January 1861 - 9 September 1947) was a Belgian architect and designer. Horta is one of the most important names in Art Nouveau architecture; the construction of his Hôtel Tassel in Brussels in 1892-3 means that he is sometimes credited as the first to introduce the style to architecture from the decorative arts.
In 1932 King Albert I of Belgium conferred on Horta the title of Baron for his services to architecture.

He studied in Ghent, but left to become an interior designer living in Montmartre in Paris. There, he was inspired by the emerging impressionist and pointillist artists, and also by the possibilities of working in iron and glass.

When Horta's father died in 1880, he returned to Belgium and moved to Brussels, to study at the academy of fine arts. He married, and fathered two daughters.

Horta did well in his studies, and was taken on as an assistant by his professor Alphonse Balat. Horta's first work to utilise glass and iron.

By 1885, Horta was working on his own, and designed three houses which were built that year. He then decided to avoid residential work for wealthy clients and instead devoted himself to competitions for public work, including statuary and even tombs. He focused on the curvature of his designs, believing that the forms he produced were highly practical and not artistic affectations.

After introducing Art Nouveau in an exhibition held in 1892, Horta was inspired. Commissioned to design a home for professor Tassel, he transfused the recent influences into Hôtel Tassel, completed in 1893. Incorporating interior iron structure with curvilinear botanical forms, which was known as “biomorphic whiplash,” and successfully created the first Art Nouveau architecture. Ornate and elaborate designs and natural lighting were concealed behind a stone façade to harmonize the building with the more rigid houses next door.

Horta was appointed Professor of Architecture at the Université Libre de Bruxelles in 1892, a post he left in 1911 after the university authorities failed to offer him the opportunity to design an extension to the university buildings.

In 1906 Horta and his first wife were divorced. He married his second wife, Julia Carlsson, in 1908.

Victor Horta had many very popular designs but for me the favourite is the Hôtel Tassel in Brussels especially the staircase design on the ground floor of this hotel. Actually that design inspired me to start my project. Every element of this design is flowing, it’s full of movement and life. The decorative elements especial on the wall are very organic which really reminds me of my previous project (Green Designs). I’m defiantly want to research his work more and learn more about his designs because I think he was a genius in what he was doing and I hope one day I will be able to design something as amazing as his projects.

What to do?

I am very passionate about interior designing and would like to develop my skills with in this subject as well as developing decorative skills. On previous project I was looking briefly at the interior design but this time I would like to look at the design at more professional way. I think that it will help me in the future career as interior designer. I want to learn more about movement in interior design. For example, how other designers have used the notion of design in their work and which elements have inspired them. I would also like to learn about new techniques especially paint techniques for interiors, and ways to show movement in the interior. It is also important that I learn more about the principals of interior design.
I have been inspired by amazing work of Victor Horta. You can see the example of his work I was inspired by on the front of my blog.
